Reflexology

Reflexology is a full body treatment using only the feet (and sometimes the hands). The main principle behind Reflexology is that by applying pressure to certain parts of the feet, other corresponding parts of the body will benefit.

Reflexologists believe the body is mapped out on a person's feet. Whilst applying pressure to various reflex points on a person's feet, therapists aim to locate areas of imbalance in the body - often presenting as tenderness or crystal deposits under the skin. The therapist will then seek to reduce these imbalances using specific finger and thumb techniques.

Reflexology is a complimentary treatment and does not claim to diagnose or cure problems - it works with the body to assist it in reaching its natural balanced state, where we all want to be - 'Homeostasis'.

History

The origins of Reflexology appear to go back thousands of years. Egyptian tomb paintings from as early as 2330 BC show foot massages being given using fingers and thumbs. The Chinese have also been using thumb pressure on acupoints to help unblock energy and enable the body to heal itself for over 5000 years.

At the start of the 20th century Dr William Fitzgerald discovered that the body could be divided into 10 longitudinal zones and that everything within each zone is inter-connected. Further development of the treatment came later in the century when an American Physiotherapist, Eunice Ingham, discovered that thumb pressure on the foot would reduce pain and start a self healing process in her patients.

Eunice Ingham undertook a great deal of research culminating in the foot maps used by Reflexologists today.

Benefits

Modern life and its stresses can lead to us slipping out of balance with our bodies, causing us to feel run down, tired, stressed and overwhlemed. The best way I can describe Reflexology is that it 'resets' you. Its soothing and meditative qualities allow you to enter a deep state of relaxation. You emerge feeling renewed, lighter, and balanced.

For general wellbeing and maintenance I would suggest a reflexology treatment once a month. This will allow your body to reset regularly - helping you to stay balanced to cope better with life's stresses and ups and downs.

If you have a particular condition or issue that you want to address - such as insomnia, anxiety, hormonal issues or migraines then I would suggest a course of 4 weekly treatments to give your body a chance to redress the imbalances.

Maternity Reflexology

Reflexology can be a wonderful support throughout pregnancy.

Reflexology is safe from the end of the first trimester and can be a wonderful support to you whilst experiencing the physical and emotional transitions of pregnancy such as:

  • Lower back and pelvic girdle pain

  • Indigestion/ acid reflux

  • Constipation

  • Nausea/ morning sickness

  • Anxiety

  • Insomnia

Relexology can also help you to physically and mentally prepare for the birth of your baby and I will show you particular reflex points that you and/or your birthing partner could apply in the run up to and during labour.

I have completed additional training in Maternity Reflexology (training approved by Association of Reflexologists). I will always take full details of your health and pregnancy to ensure that it is safe to carry out a Reflexology treatment before doing so and ensure that you are comfortable during the treatment.

in order to feel the most benefit I would recommend monthly treatments until 37 weeks and then weekly until birth.
